In Galilei, we have two choices: hide or flee. Naturally, both lead to the same outcome: we’re dying out.
Whether by the Tempest’s storms, fires from our unknown enemy, or violent creatures warped by an unforgiving world, it’s a bleak sort of anticipation. Few of us live past thirty. The young and able work as messengers and protectors, but there’s less and less to protect everyday. I can feel it, the strain, like a fraying string pulled taut.
The human instinct—the same madness that drives my people to hope against impossible odds—is barely enough to keep most of us moving forward, even if we built a civilization around those three words, the maxim that exemplifies our passive survival.
It isn’t enough for me anymore, and I suspect I’m not the only one who’s looking for a third choice. The people of Commonhope and the chaos of the outside world keep reminding me it’s futile.
But I’ll create a third option. I’ll make the blade at my hip into more than just a symbol. I stir the silence between funerals into frenzy, not docility. And I’ll stop the man who murdered my friends, my family.
Hide, flee, or fight. If I’m already dead, it’s an easy choice.
